In this corner, weighing in at 225lbs, we have Facebook ads.

Intimidating. Overwhelming. Always seems like a gamble and potential waste of money.

  • How to optimize?
  • What budget?
  • Are they worth it?

In the other corner, weighing in at a lean 109lbs…Monica Louie from Flourish with FB ads.

With an undefeated step-by-step system and a lightning quick strategy for high ROI…Monica is the overwhelming favorite to win this match.

Hooray Pinterest! I’m getting better (slowly)

After I listened to Deacon Hayes (one of Monica’s clients) on Nick Loper’s podcast last month, I’ve been obsessed with mastering Facebook ads.

Deacon spent $1,000 his first month running ads, and made $2,000. Today, with Monica’s continued help, he spends upwards of $15k to make $25k.

That’s insane, and Monica holds the secrets.

(Which aren’t really secrets at all, are they?)

After listening to that episode and interviewing her for this podcast episode…I caved and bought her course. I’m halfway through the 2nd module, and it’s amazing.

It’s well laid out, step-by-step style instructions, downloadable worksheets (which DRILL you with difficult questions from hour 1. I love it).

Here’s my affiliate link, here’s the non-affiliate link…and EITHER WAY, use PETE20 at checkout to get $20 off!

Thanks Monica 🙂 🙂

Enjoy the podcast, and keep scrolling for the key takeaways and summaries!

Also, I made a 2.5 minute video highlighting my OWN Facebook ads strategy. Grab it below. Hopefully that helps as another example.

Key Takeaways

1 – Imposter syndrome. Stop it.

As Rosemarie Groner pointed out to me at FinCon…we all have imposter syndrome.

That includes everyone you look up to, and everyone “below” you on the blog-success-scale. Self-doubt is something everyone struggles with, so with all due respect… Stop it.

(I’m talking to myself right here by the way)

me preaching on my blog

Push through day-to-day fears, worries, and self-doubt you might have, and do the work you need to do. Corny as it sounds, do the work you were meant to do.

Stop worry about whether or not you’re the right person to be doing it.

We all combat imposter syndrome.

2 – Don’t discount in-person meet ups and conferences.

FinCon 2016 changed Monica Louie’s life.

Due to 4-5 key conversations and relationships, she returned from the trip with a completely different agenda and purpose in life. She sold her PF blog, started her Facebook ads business, and 13 months later is crushing it.

Yes, attending conference can be pricey, but you NEED these in your life.

Here are 2 ways to combat the cost and get some of the same benefits:

  1. Attend local meet ups, even if smaller
  2. Travel-hack. (I flew to Dallas for FinCon17 for $11. Newbies, start with my episode w/ Lee?)

The key benefit for these meet ups/conferences is the ability to be in close proximity to passionate, like-minded individuals.

If you’re like me, you don’t live anywhere CLOSE to people like you. Bloggers. Content creators. Entrepreneurs. Small town syndrome, but I’m not moving. Conferences are how I get my fix of “just hanging out” with close friends who are on the same path in life as me.

The same path in life as me.

Conferences, local meet-ups. Don’t discount their value, regardless of the cost.

3 – A step-by-step, high-ROI system for bloggers.

Honestly? You’re not going to learn it in this blog post. Why? That’s not my purpose. It’s Monica’s purpose 🙂 To get started, do the following:

  1. Read below for my takeaways.
  2. Grab Monica’s freebie here (5 questions you MUST answer before spending any money on Facebook ads).
  3. If you’re looking to actually dive in and start running ads, grab Monica’s course (use PETE20 at checkout for $20 off). It’ll pay for itself in ONE CAMPAIGN.

That said, here’s what I took away from the interview.

  1. It starts with strategy. Like, more than a 22 second strategy.
  2. You HAVE to be in it for the long-term
  3. Patience + budget
  4. Goal – Strategy. Goal – Strategy

It starts with strategy.

Here’s one of the first worksheets in Monica’s course (hope you’re ok with this Monica lol):

sounds hard wahhh

You need to have a “why” and “how” before spending money.

Please read that again.

This is why boosting random blog posts for $20 never works. You’ll see $1.30 CPC (cost per click), and usually no conversions. You need to have a strategy. Start with…

  1. What do you want? Affiliate revenues? Email subs? Some other conversion?
  2. How are FB ads going to get you there? What till a win look like?
  3. What do you need to do to make it happen?

That’s really about it. Simple, but difficult.

The important thing is you approach spending money on paid reach for a specific purpose, and you have a strategy in place to get you there.

You HAVE to be in it for the long-term

You might already know that optimization, A/B testing, RE-optimization, etc….is the key to driving down costs in any given campaign. But…. You might not realize how long that takes.

Monica stated she truly believes Facebook wants you to have success campaigns (so you’ll keep giving them money by the way…), and Facebook’s algorithm’s really are working in the background for you… But they need time. In your very first campaign, you’re going to want to let those ads sit for at least 3 days before you re-optimize anything.

Just……know that going in. That’s all.

Speaking of which, what should you budget for your campaigns?

The minimum per ad set is $5 a day. This means if you’re running 3 ads to test against each other, that’d be $15 a day.

Of course you can ramp up later, but remember: this is a long-term game.

We’d rather you start at $15 at spend 5 weeks getting to $525…than running $30 a day and getting there in 3 weeks. You’re going to get more bang for your buck that way.

Goal – Strategy. Goal – Strategy. Goal – Strategy

Can someone shoot a rap video for this lesson? Facebook ads success?

  1. Budget for the long-term
  2. Goal – Strategy.

What’s your goal? Define it in grave details, and work backwards from there. What blog posts/pages can you use to get to that goal? What’s your mini-funnel look like using Facebook ads as the traffic driver?

What’s your goal? What’s your strategy?

What’s your goal….. What’s your strategy?

  1. Pete your podcast is by far my favorite I listen too. The value is incredible for the hour I commit to listening to them.

Planning on giving this a full listen to on my “education day” (Thursday). Excited to learn from one of the best.

    1. ooo thanks!

ANd what is education Thursday?? (I’m assuming the day you dedicate to….education? Books, courses, podcasts, other?)

  2. It’s funny that you mention the Nick Loper episode, because I didn’t even know Facebook ads were a profitable strategy for blogging until then. This is a great interview! Good stuff to keep in mind…I will continue to ignore the “boost your post” notifications until I’m ready to formulate an actual strategy.

  3. Such an awesome Podcast! So much to learn about Facebook ads. Can’t wait to take the course. Hopefully over the next couple of months. It’s happening though, I promise!

Congrats on making such a big change in your business and it succeeding Monica! So excited for you.

Pete keep the great content coming! Really appreciate your podcasts.
